Description The document describes and analyses the models representing how the PrestoSpace Factory may provide its services to the Archives and the models and protocols defined for interoperability among the PrestoSpace subsystems. Within a high level scenario description, the basic archive business process model and the overview of the PrestoSpace Factory architecture are given. The role of the PrestoSpace Orchestrator component is specifically addressed. The models of transactions between the Archives and the Factory are analysed. The offered services, the exchange mechanisms, and the PrestoSpace units and interfaces are described.

Name Knowledge database and report on tape condition
Description There are approximately 1 million U-Matic tapes on archive shelves across Europe, the majority of which are over 20 years old. Between 20% and 80% are likely to be difficult and expensive to transfer. Despite the magnitude of this problem, comparatively little information is currently available to archives on exactly what problems to expect when planning or executing U-Matic tape transfer projects. This report provides a set of guidelines for U-Matic tape transfer accompanied by quantitative tables that reveal what tape playability problems to expect.

Name Contactless playback tool for audio disks
Description A working prototype for optical playback of audio records was developed by INA. The process has been patented. This prototype is innovative with respect to the already known optical recovery methods, in that it does not require costly photographic processes, or high-end imaging solutions. A very simple lighting apparatus is the key to the process, and allows the use of conventional imagery tools. An industrial version is under development by the new partner Indeep.

This report is a survey of the state of the art of tools and algorithm for analysis of audiovisual content for the purpose of metadata extraction. The report is divided in four parts: Parts A through C discuss content analysis tools working on visual, audio and jointly on audiovisual features respectively. Part D summarises the state of the art of the tools and discusses their feasibility and practical usability, as well as the interdependencies between the various tools.

Benchmarking results, such as those of TREC Video Retrieval Evaluation (TRECVID), are used to objectively evaluate the quality of audiovisual content analysis tools.

Description A large survey has been done with the User Group, using interviews and customised questionnaires. Volumes, needs and urgencies have been identified. The questionnaire and the survey are now available on the PrestoSpace website to reach as many organisations as possible all over Europe.

The results of the first PrestoSpace questionnaire are presented in this report. They are arranged per working area and for the integrated project deliverables; taking into account the different backgrounds of the defined user groups.
